DEFINITION

The Pre-Treatment Wastewater Plant Operator is responsible for operating and monitoring pre-treatment wastewater systems to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company standards. This role involves routine testing and process adjustments to optimize wastewater treatment efficiency before discharge or further treatment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports directly to both the Maintenance Manager and Quality Control Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position is not responsible for the supervision of other employees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

• Monitors and inspects wastewater treatment systems, combined sewer overflow facilities, pumping stations, and meters to ensure all systems function properly and comply with standards.
• Operates the wastewater pre-treatment plant, adjusting chemicals dosing, water flow and coordinates the sludge removal through third party suppliers.
• Investigate potential improvements to the wastewater plant.
• Works with maintenance team and third-party suppliers to coordinate necessary plant repairs in the event of equipment failure.
• Communicates with the township regarding the wastewater plant activities, performance, and deficiencies.
• Tracks the control and use of equipment, materials, and supplies within the treatment process.
• Monitors the performance of gauges, meters, and charts in the treatment plant and pumping stations; records statistical data concerning plant operations.
• Charts lab test results for trend analysis and maintains accurate records and test results; evaluates data and writes reports as required.
• Analyzes sludge and wastewater influent and effluent samples to optimize wastewater treatment efficiency.
• Collects samples and identifies concentrations of chemical, physical, or biological characteristics of wastewater in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements.
• Conducts wastewater sample testing and prepares plant reports as required.
• Performs quality control tests on lab equipment and lab analyses; evaluates procedures and results for accuracy.
• Ensures proper containment and disposal of hazardous wastes generated by lab and plant operations.
• Responds to complaints regarding wastewater system failures, leaks, or other problems, evaluates situations and notifies appropriate authorities if necessary.
• Monitors pretreatment users to ensure compliance with discharge requirements.
• Coordinates with other utilities for locations of utility systems.
• Opens, closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, including pre-treatment systems and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to wastewater treatment (e.g., NPDES requirements).
• Knowledge of sampling and laboratory analysis techniques for wastewater testing and chemical, biological, and physical properties of wastewater and sludge.
• Proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and chemicals used in wastewater treatment.
• Safety procedures and environmental protection regulations related to wastewater treatment operations.
• Data collection, recordkeeping, and reporting methods for regulatory compliance.
• Ability to monitoring and adjust wastewater treatment processes to optimize efficiency and compliance.
• Accurately recording and interpreting operational data for reporting and process improvement.
• Identifying and troubleshooting operational issues in wastewater treatment systems.
• Using computerized systems and software for monitoring, reporting, and data management.
• Communicating effectively with team members, supervisors, and regulatory agencies.
• Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and regulatory guidelines in wastewater treatment operations.
• Interpret lab test results and make data-driven adjustments to treatment processes.
• Work independently and make sound decisions in response to operational conditions.
• Responds to system failures, alarms, and emergencies promptly and effectively.
• Maintain accurate records and prepare reports as required by regulatory agencies.
• Work in varies environmental conditions, including exposure to chemicals, odors, and outdoor elements.
• Lift and carry moderate loads, perform physical tasks, and stand for extended periods.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

(a) Completion of a high school, or general equivalency diploma; and,

(b) Completion of state-approved wastewater treatment certification course is preferred; and,

(c) Previous experience in wastewater treatment, pre-treatment operations, or industrial water treatment is preferred; and,

(d) Experience with Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems and other pre-treatment processes is beneficial; and,

(e) Familiarity with regulatory compliance, laboratory testing, and sampling techniques; and,

(f) Prior work in a manufacturing, industrial, or municipal wastewater treatment setting: and,

(g) Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Requires frequent use of a motor vehicle, generators, pH meter, pumps, gauges, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, rakes, lawn mower, snow blower, calculator, various lab equipment, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, personal computer including word processing, SCADA and other software, copy and fax machine.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

Ability to sit for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud in plant settings, and moderately quiet in office and field settings.

Employees must wear proper food safe, steel toe shoes, hair net and beard net, nitrile gloves, frock, bump cap, hat, and proper hearing protection while working in certain areas.
