Laboratory Assistant I / Phlebotomist - Full Time - Days - (UTICA, NY) at Mohawk Valley Health System summary:

As a Laboratory Assistant I / Phlebotomist, I work under the supervision of the Laboratory Director to collect and transport specimens, perform clerical functions, and support technical personnel. My responsibilities include obtaining blood specimens through venipuncture and capillary techniques, instructing patients on specimen collection, and ensuring proper labeling and chain of custody. I hold a high school diploma and have phlebotomy experience or training.

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Director of Laboratory and Laboratory Supervisor, receives patients, correctly identifies patients, collects specimens from patients, transports specimens, performs clerical functions, and assists technical personnel with assigned non-technical tasks.

Core Job Responsibilities

• Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture (capillary) or venipuncture using appropriate technique and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test performed: (LAI044, LAI050, LAI045, LAI476)
  • from neonates by capillary blood collection techniques;
  • from pediatric,
  • adolescents,
  • adult and geriatric patients

• Instructs patients in collection of urine, sputum, stool specimens. Accepts these specimens from patients and verifies labeling is complete and accurate
• Follows Chain of Custody specimen collection protocols
• Perform other duties as required.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma
• Phlebotomy work experience or phlebotomy course
